How to Buy Bitcoin Cash in Australia (2026 Guide)

What to know before buying Bitcoin Cash

Bitcoin Cash lists on Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, and most US retail brokers, with deeper order books on Binance and OKX offshore. The quote currency matters: on Coinbase you will see BCH-USD and BCH-USDT, and the spread between those two pairs can differ by more than a typical maker fee during quiet hours. Check both before routing a larger order.

The recurring loss pattern with BCH is the address format split. BCH wallets default to CashAddr (prefixed bitcoincash:) while some older exchanges and block explorers still accept legacy addresses that look identical to a Bitcoin P2PKH address, starting with a 1 or 3. Pasting a BCH CashAddr into a BTC withdrawal field, or sending BCH to a BTC receive address on an exchange that does not auto-detect the coin, is the failure mode people hit most often. Coins sent this way are usually not recoverable without cooperation from the receiving exchange, and most do not help.

Do not confuse BCH with Bitcoin SV (BSV), the November 2018 split from BCH itself. They trade separately, have different development teams, and use different address formats. A surprising number of self-custody wallets that claim BCH support are actually still on the 2017 chain state and will show ghost BSV balances on the other side of that fork.

On-chain fees are usually under a cent, so consolidation and sweeping operations that would be uneconomical on BTC are fine here. If you are self-custodying, Electron Cash is the reference desktop wallet and all major hardware wallets support BCH. Before funding from an exchange, send a small test transaction and confirm the CashAddr format end to end.
