Bitcoin Exchange Fee Study: What a 1,000 Buy Really Costs

Data collected on August 28, 2026 from live exchange fee schedules.

We compared the entry-tier spot taker fees that major exchanges charge on a Bitcoin market buy in the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Germany.

The gap is bigger than most buyers expect: on a 1,000-unit purchase in local currency, the same trade can cost 60 times more on the most expensive US platform than on the cheapest one.

    Key findings

    • United States: taker fees range from 0.02% (Binance.US) to 1.20% (Coinbase, Gemini) β€” a 60Γ— spread on the identical market order.
    • Australia and Mexico have the lowest fee floors: three platforms in each country charge just 0.10%.
    • Germany is the most expensive market in the study: the cheapest available taker fee is 0.35% (OKX).
    • Free local deposit rails exist in every country β€” ACH, Interac e-Transfer, PayID, SPEI, and SEPA β€” so the trading fee is usually the main cost.

    Methodology

Fees are the entry-tier spot taker fees published by each exchange, collected through the coinvela fee database on the date shown above. Lower rates may apply at higher trading volumes.

Deposit methods listed are fiat funding rails the exchange offers at no deposit fee in that country. Card purchases and instant-buy products typically cost more and are excluded.

Taker fees are only part of the total cost: spread, withdrawal fees, and payment-method surcharges also affect what you pay. Fees change frequently β€” always confirm on the exchange before trading.
